A Bit Of History About Nordic Thor’s Hammer Pendants:
Here is a small history on the Viking Thor, Mjolnir and Thor’s Hammer Pendants:
Thor was the eldest son of Odin. His mother was a giantess named Jord. Thor had very humble beginnings. We don’t know much about them but he quickly overtook his father in popularity. Many Vikings took to wearing a Thor’s Hammer Pendants as historical jewelry unearthed has shown. Odin was mysterious and favored royals and leaders. Thor was protective of not only his friends and family but common humans as well. Thor’s wife was named Sif. She was a goddess that we don’t know much about. We do know she had a role in the creation of his famed hammer. Thor had three children. Two boys and a girl. His Daughter survived Ragnarok (the Norse apocalypse) and later went on to help recreate the world.
Thor’s most common enemies were the giants who lived in Jotunheim. This was just one of Norse nine mythological worlds. While sometimes cordial, the gods and giants had many frequent battles. Thor almost always was leading the charge and coming out on top. Riding in his goat-drawn chariot, Thor’s constant want for fighting with the giants was seen as thunder and lightning in the human world Midgard. When storms came people knew that Thor was fighting again somewhere on their behalf. This is why Norse poetry refers to him as the Thunder God or God Of Thunder.
Many people do know that our weekly day named Thursday was originally Thor’s Day.
It seems the power of the Thunder God Thor was most surely symbolized by his hammer, mjolnir (translates to “Crusher”) and it extended over everything that had to do with the well-being of the community. It covered births, marriages, deaths, burials, and cremation ceremonies. It was also present during the making of oaths between men. The famous weapon of Thor was the symbol of the destructive power of the storm, and the fire from heavens. The Norse Viking Thor’s Hammer was also a protection against all forces of evil and violence. Couple that with Elder Futhark Runes and you have a one, two punch. Without it Asgard couldn’t be guarded against the giants. Men also relied on it to give security and to support to the rules of law at that time because of the power and deep meaning these sacred amulets possessed.
